Our Programs

Primary Opportunities

Our primary service is homework/ESL tutoring sessions. These are held on Tuesdays from 6:30 to 8 p.m. and Saturdays from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. There are two different opportunities available at tutoring sessions:

Homework Tutoring for K-12 Students

Our students are enrolled in schools all across the city. They are assigned homework in all subject areas. Their grasp of English and their letter grades in school vary, but each child who brings homework to Burmese Immersion Project tutoring sessions receives help from volunteers.

Team Leaders for K-12 Students

At tutoring sessions, students without homework are assigned into “learning teams.” These learning teams work on ESL projects, play English learning games, or read books, all with the help of a volunteer “team leader.” Volunteering as a team leader is a great way to develop friendships with students, as you are working with the same 5 to 10 students every week.

Other Opportunities

High Achievers Program

The High Achievers Program is for middle school and high school students who are devoted to improving their education. The High Achievers Program takes place on Sunday nights from 6 to 8 p.m. at UW-Milwaukee.

Parties, One-Time Activities, and Outings

The Burmese Immersion Project occasionally holds one-time events, such as parties and field trips. We are always in need of people to help with food and snacks, and supervision on outings and at parties.

Organizational and Professional Services

The Burmese Immersion Project Board of Directors is seeking volunteers with particular backgrounds and skill sets, such as marketing, legal services, and education, to serve on our Board or on a committee. Please fill out our Contact Us form and select “Organizational” or “General” option if you are interested in working with us in these capacities.

If you are interested in any of the above volunteer opportunities please fill out our volunteer application.
